Ink Blood Sister Scribe was originally a selection in June for my Book of the Month Subscription. I ultimately passed it up for ‘She Started It’ by Sian Gilbert. It was still in the back of my mind so when Hannah brought up selecting it for our August “Pick of the Month” I immediately added it to my July box subscription.

I wasn’t sure about reading a Fantasy, I’ve only ever read one before this & honestly wasn’t a huge fan. But I can tell you with extreme joy that I am happy that I gave it a chance because I REALLY liked it in the end! It started out a little slow for me, I was definitely confused for the first few chapters. I for sure thought Pearl was going to be a Vampire because of the description of her sharp teeth & Esther was a werewolf when she was sniffing that guy & her surroundings. This could be from a combination of parent derived sleep deprivation or that I have a very “black & white” idea of fantasy books. But once it clicked, I really got into it. This book probably would be something I would have devoured in middle school, there is something so beautiful in my opinion of the description of magic (whether you’re a non-believer or not). I think the author did a beautiful job of telling a story, I truly felt the ups & the downs, the excitement & the disappointments of the characters.

I especially enjoyed Nicholas, his quirky yet posh personality. He was almost childlike because of his seclusion, the outside world was a wonder to him and in exchange he was a wonder to those he met in the outside world. What were your initial thoughts starting the book? I wasn’t hooked at first, I was worried that the fantasy aspect would be too much for me but I was pleasantly surprised. Did you have a feeling there was more to Esther? That she wasn’t lacking magic as she described herself? I was sure there was something about her, but I didn’t know right away what that was. What did you think of the description of magic & how it worked in this book? I really liked this re-imagined idea of magic & how it exists. Now I say this not having read a lot of books about magic, so maybe it’s an existing idea. But I liked that it was more than just witches & wizards with potions & so forth. Were you surprised by the little bit of romance thrown in at the end? Kinda, I thought it was a sweet addition, I think that I was secretly hoping for the love to be between Esther & Nicholas. I do think it’s sweet that Esther & Pearl ended up back together, I think in the end that’s what Esther really needed after of a lifetime of running.
